Although Suicide Squad wasn’t exactly a hit with critics, it was a box office success, and most fans agree that Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn was one of its highlights. Robbie is expected to reprise the role, but it remains unclear in what project. To date there have been rumors of a Joker and Harley movie, a female supervillain team-up, and Suicide Squad 2.
Robbie has spoken about playing the role again, and in an interview with MTV, she revealed that she is also working on a “separate” Harley movie, unconnected to those other projects. “Yeah, I’ve been working on it for two years now,” she said. “It’s hard to kind of talk about it, because all the stuff is kind of under lock and key. But I’ve been working on a separate spinoff Harley thing for a while now.”
It was first reported that Robbie had signed a deal with DC’s parent company Warner to produce and star in a Harley movie in September last year. It was subsequently rumored that she might also reteam with Suicide Squad director David Ayer for an all-female team-up called Gotham City Sirens.
However, there has been no further news about this project, and in August it emerged that a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, with Jared Leto also reprising his Suicide Squad role, was in the works. In addition, Suicide Squad 2 is expected to start shooting next year, but it is unknown if Robbie will return for that.
In related news, Warner is making a Harley Quinn animated series geared toward adult audiences. The studio has ordered a 26-episode first season, which will join the already-announced revival of the animated series Young Justice and a live-action Titans show. Harley Quinn, which is the tentative title of the series, will follow the one-time girlfriend of The Joker as she attempts to establish herself as Gotham City’s criminal queenpin.
